Oslo Walking Tour with Kon-Tiki Expedition & Fram Polar Ship Museums
Take a journey into the Norwegian exploration history and tour Oslo on foot and by sea.
Our exciting walking tour of the captivating Norwegian capital city starts from your hotel or cruise port.
Before sailing over the Oslo fjord to the west of the city, we will get to know the Viking heritage and landmarks of the city, as well as enjoy the stunning green hilltop views you will surely remember for a long time.
The strategically positioned Akershus Castle and Fortress built already in the 13th century gives us a wonderful introduction into Oslo, not only as a medieval settlement, but as a cradle of cultural and industrial development in Norway.
We are able to admire the beautiful Oslo fjord archipelago below. Traditional wooden houses painted in bright colors to our left and the many fairy-tale like shaped hills and mountains embracing the city to our right.
Down on the street level we will next make our way towards one of the most compact city centers in Europe. Karl Johans gate, the main street, named in honor of King Charles III John, is a wonderful blend of several older streets and passages. We will find the beautiful Oslo Cathedral on one end and the elegant Royal Palace on the opposite end. In between we will stop to see the Central Station and Stortinget, the National Theater, the old University Buildings, the Palace Park and pond.
In a splendid location on the waterfront, we will also tour the City Hall building. Seemingly a cold brick remnant of post-war architecture, the floor to ceiling murals and wooden carvings inside give the building warmth and meaning. From fascinating examples of Norwegian mythology to the Nobel Peace Prize awards hall, this is a venue well worth a visit.
Once over on the green Bygdoy peninsula, we will learn of the legendary Norwegian explorers and national heroes with their lifework presented in Fram Polar Ship and Kon-Tiki Museums. Both museums house the original vessels, whereas the Fram is the strongest wooden ship ever built holding still the world records for sailing farthest north and south.
From brave Viking sailors and Arctic explorers, we will return to downtown Oslo in a less ground-braking way on a local ferry and end the tour by the City Hall.
